How To Smoke a Cigar
Cigar connoisseurs claim that smoking one is an art form in itself.
And rightly so – to get the best flavour and “smoke”,
one must follow a few rules:
1. Before beginning, make sure you have ample time, and are in a comfortable
atmosphere. The art of smoking a cigar is not to be done in haste.
2. Observe Cigar etiquette and remove the band of your cigar before
smoking.
3. Hold your cigar properly, at a 30° angle. Let it rest on your
middle finger, with your second finger above. Do not hold it like a
cigarette!
4. Light the cigar with a butane lighter (matches are impossible) and
take a moment while it cools down for about a minute or so. Smoking
a just-lit cigar can create a bitter flavour.
5. Now, take a leisurely puff into your mouth, and do not inhale the
smoke, taking care not to swallow any tobacco residue either.
6. If you need to get the cigar going, take a few short, fast puffs.
In case of uneven burning, you can easily remedy this by holding the
area burning slowest towards the bottom.
7. Timing is vital. Ideally, one should take in smoke just once or twice
in a minute, as any more may cause the cigar to overheat, letting out
a bitter mouth burn.
8. Keep in mind that you want to keep a steadily lit cigar as this ensures
the best flavour. Relighting you cigar can diminish the quality of the
smoke, so avoid smoking too slowly, which can cause the cigar to go
out.
